International alternative networks are non-commercial agencies which keep up with the development of media and information within their countries. They are not imperialist structures that are internalized. They are independent non-commercial alternatives that are working to bring multimedia into the 21st Century. They first appeared in the 1990s. Today, they comprise a variety of media including videos, news websites and tutorials. Many of them have evolved into multinational companies and are an integral component of any democratic media strategies.
These organizations are united by their non-commercial principles, and are opposed to imperialist structures of power. They spread their ideas through organizing information and communications reform efforts and promoting an inclusive and egalitarian Internet. They also build new communication infrastructures to support local connections, regional and global developments related to social movements.
The strength of these worldwide networks is rooted in cooperation through social movement organizing campaigns as well as media reform campaigns that adapt information and communication to benefit all. They are developing a complicated lattice of regional, local (especially south-south) and transnational links which bypass colonial old connections between north and south and power dynamics.
These international networks continue to establish regional connections, while also promoting the democratization of and reforms to information and communication. They have become a vital part of the fight for better human rights as well as environmental sustainability.
